Description

This area of the sky is located between Cassiopeia and Camelopardalis but is technically part of Cassiopeia. The hand or dark nebula LDN 1357 appears to have been caught in the moment after star SU Cas slips through its dusty fingers. SU Cas is wreathed in a bluish reflection nebula vdB 9. Two other named dark nebula appear in this image: LDN 1355 is located in the wrist of the "hand" and LDN 1358 would appear on the arm or shoulder of this spectral appendage. The colorful reflection nebula at the lower left is vdB 7 and is illuminated by RZ Cas.

As a science fiction fan, this cosmic hand reminds me of the alien hand throwing galaxy marbles at the end of the first Men in Black movie. https://sm.ign.com/t/ign_za/screenshot/t/the-final-/the-final-alien-in-the-first-men-in-black-movie-is-only-glim_txuv.1080.jpg
